The Mama is to be respected. When she has her eye on you, you had better mind your ‘P’s & Q’s’ cause she will tell you what’s what if you don’t. Being the keeper of the values she has a pivotal role to play in society. I am very grateful for having known many such Mama’s.

This particular Mama comes from Aurukun, a community halfway up Cape York and has been portrayed using graphite and charcoal. Her body paint and head feather are all of spiritual significance emulating those values that she holds dear. While that gaze may be  quite intense it holds within it’s reaches a sense of boundaries and great safety.
